Charles Barry was given the opportunity to design this epic clock tower. The name
"Big Ben" does not refer to the tower, but to the largest of the five bells inside
the clock tower and is located at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in
London. It is the largest clock and the third tallest standing clock tower in the
world. It consists of four dials that are each twenty four feet in diameter and
minute hands that are fourteen feet long. Big Ben was the second 13 ton bell made
for the clock.
The clock started working on 31st May 1859 and celebrated its 150th anniversary
in May 2009. Now, it has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United
Kingdom and is an iconic symbol of the country and London.
The sounds of the tower have been the focused on the entry of the New Year. When
the tower rings and if you are standing close enough, you can feel the vibration
all over your body. This architectural wonder did not stop working even during the
Second World War when a bomb destroyed the chamber of the House of Parliament.
This clock tower attracts tourists from all over the world, the majority being other
Europeans. To reach the Belfry you must climb 334 steps and then you get to enjoy
one of the greatest views London has to offer. Big Ben has certainly played its
part in promoting London as a major tourist location. The clock tower is not open
to the public, but UK residents can arrange a visit to the top of the Clock Tower.
