South Kensington is a district in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London. It is a built-up area located 2.4 miles west south-west of Charing Cross. The area was largely undeveloped until the mid 19th century, being an agricultural area supplying London with fruit and vegetables. Only the area south of Cromwell Road is regarded as South Kensington. The nearest Tube stations are South Kensington and Gloucester Road. A dazzling array of boutiques and restaurants is set amidst the great landmarks of the Science Museum, Natural History Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Albert Memorial. The museums have been used as elegant backdrops for events such as London Fashion Week, and outdoor exhibitions.
